Last wednesday, Rupi Kaur, with her live show, came to Portugal to recite some of her poems. Or at least that was what I thought. Because, in reality, she gave us a two hour long amazing show (spoilers).

If you don't know who Rupi Kaur is, well then, she is a poet, artist and performer. She has now 4 books published: milk and honey, the sun and her flowers, home body, and recently Healing Through Words. Rupi's poems touchs on topics like love, trauma, healing, femininity and migration.

I was so excited to see her. I have now 2 out of the 4 books and I love both. It's the simplicity of the words mixed in metaphoric phrases. If you're a women you will definitely resemble in it. Or at least in a couple of poems of her. It's so beautiful and her illustrations do some much as well.

Na quarta-feira passada, a Rupi Kaur, com a sua turné, veio a Portugal para recitar alguns dos seus poemas. Ou pelo menos era o que eu achava. Porque, na realidade, ela deu-nos um espetáculo fenomenal de duas horas (spoilers).

Se não sabem quem é a Rupi Kaur, bem, ela é uma poeta, artista e performer. Atualmente ela tem 4 livros publicados: milk and honey, the sun and her flowers, home body, e recentemente Healing Through Words. Os poemas da Rupi tocam em tópicos como o amor, trauma, melhoramento, feminismo e migração.

Eu estava muito entusiasmada para vê-la. Eu tenho 2 dos 4 livros dela e adoro ambos. É a simplicidade das palavras misturadas em frases metafóricas. Se são mulheres vão definitivamente rever-se no trabalho. Ou pelo menos num grupo de poemas. É tão bonito e as suas ilustrações fazem tanto.

Talking about the show, it was really a perfomance of poetry, not really a declamation. Which made everything more memorable. I did cry. I did laugh. And above that I did think. But all in a peaceful and healthy and supportive space.

She talked about her stories, about things that happened to her. Obviously she recited poems, some improvised, some in silence, others with the magic of sounds. But she also gave her audience space to talk freely and give opinion. She didn't want snaps. She wanted applauses, screams, words.

Falando sobre o espetáculo, foi mesmo uma performance de poesia, não uma declamação. O que tornou tudo mais memorável. Eu chorei. Eu ri. E mais do que tudo eu pensei. Mas tudo num espaço pacífico, saudável e solidário.

Ela contou algumas histórias, sobre coisas que aconteceram com ela. Obviamente ela recitou poemas, alguns improvisados, alguns em silêncio, outros com a magia dos sons. Mas ela também deu à audiência espaço para falar livremente e dar a sua opinião. Ela não queria estalos de dedos. Ela queria aplausos, gritos, palavras.

What was most incredible about her show, was that you can totally feel that she liked what she was doing, she created an atmosphere for us and particularly for us in specific. Because at a certain point in the show she admitted that she was modifying and changing the perfomance according to the energy that we provided to her. She even asked for her book, milk and honey, because she really wanted to recite one of its poems, but because it was not planned she didn't have it written anywhere and didn't remember out of her head.

It was simply marvellous. I felt so in me. I went alone, but I never felt like it. I was with everyone. But specially I was within me. It was almost like an inner experience.

O mais incrível do seu espetáculo foi que dava para sentir totalmente que ela gosta do que faz, ela criou uma atmosfera para nós e em particular para o seu público português. Porque a certo momento ela admite que mudou e trocou uma parte da sua performance de acordo com a energia que estava a sentir por parte de nós. Ela até pediu o seu livro, leite e mel, porque queria muito recitar um dos seus poemas, mas visto que não estava planeado, ela não tinha escrito em lado nenhum e também não o sabia de cor. 

Foi simplesmente maravilhoso. Eu senti-me tão em mim. Estava sozinha, mas não me senti só. Estava com todos. Mas especialmente dentro de mim. Foi quase como uma experiência de introspeção.

Talking about my outfit. I'm very proud of it. Is very artistic, with earthy tones, not gonna lie a bit original. I would describe it has literature student meets edgy meets casual. In warm tones. I combined the vibes I was feeling from Rupi Kaur and her work and my own style. Which apparently means brown pants, platform shoes, a mesh top with and ribbed top on top and a pink stripe shirt.

Falando sobre o meu visual. Estou muito orgulhosa. É artístico, com tons terra, não vou mentir, um pouco original. Descrevê-lo-ia como estudante de literatura junto com arrojado junto com casual. Em tons quentes. Combinei os vibes que estava a sentir da Rupi Kaur e do seu trabalho com o meu estilo. O que aparentemente quer dizer calças castanhas, sapatos com plataforma, manga comprida mesh e uma blusa canelada e uma camisa de riscas rosa.
