Unfortunately I couldn’t volunteer like last year because of work, but I still manage to go to some days and watch a few movies. You will see how that week went in a couple of days, in my next post, but for now I will share with you the outfits I wore and after maybe seven years bring back to the blog the typical movie reviews.

É aquela altura do ano outra vez, e eu espero que vocês não se cansem porque eu gosto mesmo de escrever sobre isto. O MOTELX, o Festival Internacional de Cinema de Terror de Lisboa, este ano aconteceu uma semana mais tarde, mas até que foi bom porque assim apanhamos bom tempo.

Infelizmente, não pude participar como voluntária como o ano passado porque estive a trabalhar. Contudo tive a possibilidade de ir alguns dias e assistir a alguns filmes. Irão ver como foi essa semana daqui a uns dias, no meu próximo post, mas por agora irei partilhar convosco os visuais que usei e talvez depois de sete anos trazer de volta para o blogue os típicos reviews de filmes.

12th of September - day one of the festival

You won’t be alone

I believe you can't be spoiled about this film, no matter what I say, because it's all about the feels. In short, it takes place in the 19th century and it is about a young witch that accidentally kills someone and decided to see what life is like in her skin.

My score is a 2.5 out of 5. I have very mixed feelings about it. Technically speaking, it was a great movie. Story wise also good, but no that engaging for me. What I really didn't like and it through me off was caracterizing it as horror. Yes, it is a bit gruesome, but the rest is kinda boring. 

It was interesting in the first half. The cinematography and message behind it was quite beautiful, but then it just couldn't hold me through the whole film. At some point it seem, in my point of view that they tried to make a slice o life movie into horror, and that doesn’t makes sense to me. 

But it is a polarizing film, because my sister loved it. So, take this opinion however you like.

Run Rabbit Run

This one is your basic a little bit indie, but also mainstream type of horror movie. It is about a mother that it is challenged by an increasingly strange behavior of her young daughter. In this journey she is forced to face ghosts from the past.

I give it a 3 out of 5. At first thought I gave it a half star more, but now, a few days later I can see that it is a bit forgetable. Because of how basic it is. And that's the thing it is a good movie, but nothing happens that is memorable. 

I like it more than the previous one just because it was more entertaining and it captivated me during the whole film. However, it is predictable. It does make you scared nonetheless, you'll be on the edge of your seat for couple times. Plus, the acting and actors choice is incredible. It has that annoying effect.

I would recommend you watch it, however keep it in mind that it's not the most original.

Eu acredito que não há grande maneira de estragar o filme, porque é tudo uma questão de sensações. Resumidamente, passa-se no século XIX e é sobre uma jovem bruxa que acidentalmente mata uma pessoa e decide ver como é a vida na pele dessa pessoa.

A minha pontuação é de 2.5 de 5.  Eu tenho sentimentos mistos. Tecnicamente falando, é um filme muito bom. A história também não é má, mas não completamente envolvente para mim. O que eu realmente não gostei foi caracterizá-lo como terror. Sim, é um pouco nojento, mas o resto é um bocadinho aborrecido.

Foi interessante no primeiro tempo. A fotografia e a mensagem por trás dele eram muito bonitas, mas simplesmente não conseguiram me segurar durante todo o filme. Em algum momento parece, no meu ponto de vista, que eles tentaram transformar um filme de terror em um pedaço da vida, e isso não faz sentido para mim.

Mas é um filme polarizador, porque minha irmã adorou. Então, aceite essa opinião como quiser.

Este é o tipo filme básico de terror um pouco indie, mas também mainstream. Trata-se de uma mãe que é desafiada pelo comportamento cada vez mais estranho da filha. Nesta jornada ela é forçada a enfrentar fantasmas do passado.

Dou 3 de 5. No início pensei em dar meia estrela a mais, mas agora, alguns dias depois, vejo que é um pouco esquecível. Por ser tão básico. E o problema é esse, é um bom filme, mas não acontece nada que seja memorável.

Gosto mais dele do que o anterior, só porque foi mais divertido e cativou-me durante todo o filme. No entanto, é previsível. Mesmo assim, ficam com medo e ficaram na ponta da cadeira algumas vezes. Além disso, as atuações e a escolha de atores é incrível. O filme tem aquele efeito irritante.

Eu recomendo-o, mas lembrem-se de que não é dos mais originais.

15th of September - day four of the festival

Infinity Pool

I was so excited for this one. From the get go, I said that if I could only see a movie, I would go see this one. It is about a couple that is staying at an isolated island resort. When they venture outside the walls off the resort they are encountered by a culture filled with violence, hedonism and horror.

I give it a score of 4 out of 5. I will admit that it was not what I expected, but I was not disappointed, whatsoever. To be honest, the type of horror is right up my alley. There was only two little things that I don't love, maybe a bit too comedic and a character too annoying. But I recognize that it works!

The style of shooting, the cinematography, the editing was impeccable. I love that it was jarring and it was not afraid to show it. Plus, the topic that it touches is very original. I will say that towards the end it gets repetitive.

I need to mention that was really nice to have Brandon Cronenberg there. Definitely check this one out.

Sessão Surpresa FilmTwist MOTELX 

I can now say that the surprise movie was the remastered version of Ichi the Killer from Takashi Miike. In case you don't know, this movie has the reputation of being a very gross movie. It's about a sadomasochist yakuza that in his search for his boss comes across Ichi, a psychotic killer.

I'm between a 3 and 3.5 out of 5. Keep in mind that I watched this one at midnight, after a day of work and right after Infinity Pool, so I was a bit tired. But the more I think about it, the more I think I enjoyed it. Like some visual effects are kind of bad, but I understand the hype. It was entertaining.

It was a bit long for that hour, people were already a bit exausted, but I understand why midnight - it just works great. Love how extreme it is. Not only in the gross aspect, but also how it goes above and beyond in every scene. He just went all out, no filters. Again, I enjoy the cinematography and the editing style a lot. 

It is gruesome, but it's from 2001, so some gross aspects were not that believable now. Maybe it is intentional. But some were very real too.

Infinity Pool

Eu estava muito animada com este. Desde o início que disse que se só pudesse ver um filme, iria ver este. É sobre um casal que está hospedado num resort numa ilha isolada. Quando eles se aventuram para fora dos muros do resort, eles deparam-se com uma cultura cheia de violência, hedonismo e horror.

Dou-lhe uma nota 4 em 5. Admito que não era o que esperava, mas não fiquei desiludida de forma alguma. Para ser honesta, o tipo de terror é mesmo o que eu gosto. Houve apenas duas pequenas coisas que eu não adorei, talvez um pouco cómico demais e um personagem muito chato. Mas reconheço que funciona!

O estilo de filmagem, a fotografia, a edição são impecáveis. Eu adorei o facto que é chocante e não teve medo de mostrar isso. Além disso, o tema que aborda é muito original. Diria que no final fica repetitivo.

Quero mencionar que foi muito bom ter o Brandon Cronenberg lá. Definitivamente vejam este.

Agora já posso dizer que o filme surpresa foi a versão remasterizada de Ichi the Killer de Takashi Miike. Caso não saibam, este filme tem a reputação de ser um dos filmes mais nojentos. É sobre um membro da yakuza sadomasoquista que na busca pelo seu chefe depara-se com Ichi, um assassino psicótico.

Estou entre 3 e 3.5 em 5. Lembrem-se que assisti este à meia-noite, depois de um dia de trabalho e logo após Infinity Pool, então estava um pouco cansada. Mas quanto mais penso nisso, mais acho que gostei. Alguns efeitos visuais são um bocado maus, mas eu entendo o hype. Foi divertido.

A duração é um pouco demais para aquela hora, as pessoas já estavam um pouco exaustas, mas eu entendo o porquê da meia-noite - simplesmente funciona muito bem. Adoro o facto de ser extremista. Não só no aspeto repugnante, mas também como vai além do imaginário em cada cena. Ele simplesmente deu tudo, sem filtros. Mais uma vez, gostei muito da cinematografia e do estilo de edição.

Sendo de 2001, alguns aspetos nojentos não são tão credíveis agora. Talvez seja intencional. Mas alguns eram porém muito reais.

16th of September - day five of the festival

A Semente do Mal

In english Amelia's Children, it's a portuguese horror movie. And what an incredible surprise that was. It tells the story of Edward, who's take to a house in the north of Portugal in his search to find his biological parents. But soon he finds out he is bound to a monstuous secret.

My score continues to be a 4 out of 5. My expections were not high, and maybe that played a part, but I liked it so much. It's not a super original story, but you can see that the director doesn't intended to be either. It's how it is told and showed that is compelling and interesting.

The funny aspects are definitely more targeted to the portuguese audience, but whole vibe and tension during the film and emphasized by the acting is understandable to any language. The performances are great. It's also a fact that being 80% spoke in english also helps gather more public. 

The film is simple, it's your classic horror movie, but it's so well done and very enjoyable.

A Semente do Mal

Em inglês é Amelia's Children, mas é um filme português de terror. E que incrível surpresa. Conta a história de Edward, que é levado a uma casa no norte Portugal na sua procura de encontrar os pais biológicos. Mas rapidamente descobre que está ligado a segredos monstruosos. 

A minha pontuação é de 4 em 5. As minhas expetativas não eram altas, e isso talvez ajudou, mas eu gostei bastante. Não é a história mais original, mas o realizador também não pretende que o seja. É a maneira como é contada e mostrada que é atraente e interessante.

O aspeto cómico é definitivamente direcionado à audiência portuguesa, mas todo o vibe e tensão durante o filme e enfatizado pela atuação dos atores é compreendida em qualquer língua. As atuações são boas. Também é um facto que ser falado maioritariamente em inglês ajuda a conseguir mais público.

O filme é simples, é o clássico filme de terror, mas é muito bem feito e agradável.

17th of September - day six of the festival

Mister Organ

To end this horror week at the festival, I went to see a documentary by David Farrier. This true crime stories are always so interesting. As you may know, David Farrier is a journalist and in this movie he decided to investigate some reports of fraudulent car clamping. However, things take a turn and is pushed to the limits of his sanity.

Overall, it is a 3 out 5. The premise was odd and appealing and it started very well. But as the movie went on it became repetitive. Specially towards the end. He just continue to justify the same piece of conclusion, which was even that overwhelming. 

Not taking credits of the documentary that was still newsworthy, I just felt that it lacked excitement. I understand why at some point he had to back off, but it needed more. What he discovered could hold you to an extent. Then it just lost it.

Even though the whole story is incredible weird and maybe give it a shot, I wanted more.

Mister Organ

Para acabar este semana de terror, fui ver um documentário do David Farrier. As histórias de crime reais são sempre tão interessantes. Como podem saber, David Farrier é um jornalista e que neste filme decido investigar algumas reclamações de bloqueios de carros fraudulentos. Contudo, as coisas dão uma reviravolta e ele é levado aos limites.

No geral, um sólido 3 em 5. A premissa é bem estranha e cativante, e começou bastante bem. Mas à medida que o filme seguia, começou a ficar repetitivo. Especialmente, no final. Ele apenas continua a justificar a mesma conclusão, que nem foi muito escandalosa. 

Não tirando o mérito do documentário que ainda assim é digno de notícia, apenas senti que faltou algo excitante. Eu compreendo o porquê de ele ter de parar a investigação, mas faltou algo mais. O que ele descobriu apenas te agarra até certo ponto. Depois perde força.

Mesmo que a história seja bizarra e talvez seja digna de oportunidade, eu gostaria de mais.
